Kathleen Tunmer of
Niagara Falls took over as Sunday school superintendent in September of 2007, after eight years of teaching in the Sunday
school.
Kathleen married husband Lesslie at St. Andrew’s in 1990. She is a part-time tailor in the wardrobe
department of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Shaw Festival. Lesslie is the head of scenery construction for the Shaw. The Tunmer
family, including children Fiona and Graham, is active in the church.
"We have an intimate Sunday school
from nursery level to Grade 8," says Kathleen. The young people adjourn to Sunday school following a children’s
story and hymn during regular Sunday services.
Sunday school teaching staff include: Ashley Paines and Fiona Tunmer,
nursery; Claudia Dettenmaier and Kathleen Tunmer, toddlers; Trudy Wilson and Jessica Jennings, Kindergarten; Sandy Davis and
Nancy MacCallum, Grades 1 and 2; Kathy Beigie and Lynn Lingard, Grades 3 and 4; Donna Pearce and Sandra Moore, Grades 5 and
6; and Julie Hunter and Matthew Lingard, Grades 7 and 8. The teachers’ schedule allows them to alternate between one
month of teaching and one month of staying in the church for the whole Sunday service.
In Sunday school, the young
people study scripture, sing songs and do crafts. Once a month, they meet together as an "assembly" and celebrate
birthdays of the month.
Our Sunday school is very active in outreach. This year, it sponsored an education package
for Third World countries and snow clothing for children in Romania. For the past six years, it has sponsored a child, Lillian
Denise in Columbia, South America. For the past two years, it has taken part in the Hannah House baby bottle campaign to raise
money for the Niagara Falls non-profit agency that shelters and supports adolescent mothers of all races, religions and national
origins. The agency offers prenatal guidance and teaches parenting skills. At Christmas, the Sunday school has a mitten and
hat tree and supports the Out of the Cold program. It has also supported The RAFT—another non-profit organization which
provides support services to high-risk and homeless street youth. There is also an annual Sunday school picnic, soup and sandwich
luncheon and Christmas pageant.
Kathleen welcomes new families to St. Andrew’s and their children to our
Sunday school.
